Given the prompt of a grid, we are to create a 2D piece.

Making the Grid

I started with an actual grid and bounced ideas from there.

I spent a lot of time deciding what I wanted to make using my grid. I knew I wanted to work with light and create a 3D object that would influence a 2D image.

I settled on Flamenco because its one of those experiences that strongly lives in my memory. They danced on a small platform in order for their shoes to make the right noise. I wanted to create something that was so unassuming, maybe interesting, and then throw the audience into a new perspective. A show. Small, but effective. It didn’t need to be large, just simply beautiful.

A Bird's Eye View

I used the grid to restrict my movements. I could place my base (my feet) any where in the grid, but not crossing the lines. The length above the base of the foamboard (the hands and dress) could flow and cross boundaries.

I’ve always admired dancers. The amount of strength, passion and confidence to perform that comes with years of rigid practice and specific steps. I tried to capture a sense of fluidity through such a rigid structure.

The abstract top down view is one aspect of my 2D objective.

The paper sculpture is abstract from different point of views, but given the right angle, it reveals the dancer cast in shadow, the second half of my 2D piece.

2D inspired 3D to create 2D.
